The immune system works 24/7 to identify antigens of foreign substances in the body and destroy or get rid of them. Simple speaking, the immune system defends the body from harmful foreign bodies like virus, bacteria and germs. They stay vigilant at all times and attack at the first signs of danger or invasion. The immune system is essential for our existence, without which, our body would be exposed to infections / diseases arising due to the attacks of bacteria, virus and germs.
If for any reason the immune system is weak or not functioning properly, the chances of the individual falling sick and being susceptible to life threatening ailments is high.
What activates the immune system?
The immune system can be activated because of various reasons. The common among these being the entry of unknown or external bacterial, virus or germs in the bloodstream or body. The immune system acts as the first action barrier against a foreign body in the human body. They ensure that germs, virus or bacteria does not go beyond a certain point or do not cause harm. The great thing about the immune system is that once it has identified and fought against one particular bacterial, virus or germ; it stores the information about the virus and the ways to fight it. So, the next time the immune system comes in contact with the same virus or bacteria, it is ready to respond faster and more effectively.
Kinds of immune systems in the body
The immune system has two subsystems known as innate (non-specific) and adaptive (specific) immune system. Both the innate and adaptive work together to effectively eliminate any ailment causing virus or bacteria. However, while the innate immune system is the first action force against germs or bacteria or virus entering the body through the skin or through the digestive system; the adaptive comes into play for the more specific or major ailment causing bacteria. The adaptive system takes a fraction longer to kick into action, as it studies the foreign body, understands it and starts remedial action specific to that. As the name suggests, it is adaptive and evolves as the bacteria or virus evolves and changes as the virus or bacteria changes each time.
Our immune system is our vigilant army standing at the border protecting us, ensuring that the body remains safe and secure. Self-awareness, self-care and a healthy lifestyle will ensure a functional and alert immune system, eliminating the need for assistance from medication and external medical intervention.
